DOSTOEVSKY 200 / BEAUTY SAVES THE WORLD

PosterTerritory Initiative in partnership with the Golden Bee Global Biennale of Graphic Design presents a poster event that celebrates a 200 year anniversary since the birth of one of the great Russian novelists F.M. Dostoevsky. PosterTerritory is proud to be the first online media platform that will feature selections from this poster collection, which will go live on November 11, 2021, the day of Dostoevsky’s birthday.

Golden Bee’s president Serge Serov shared with PosterTerritory his thoughts about this project and about the authors that took part in this poster event:

Integration of Russia’s creative endeavors with the outside world and popularization of the country’s cultural triumphs are some of the main goals of the Golden Bee. This is why we could not let the 200th anniversary of Dostoevsky’s birth pass unnoticed.

Speaking of the “Beauty that will save the world”, Dostoevsky is the artist of great inner beauty. The intrinsic allure of his writing unfolds “from the inside out”. Likewise, the basic aesthetics of design are created according to the same principles: “form follows function”, “ornament is a crime”… Dostoevsky would have liked these design memes that became popular in the 20th century.

He would have probably enjoyed even more the post-industrial design aesthetics of the 21st century, which clearly turned towards ethics, moral values, empathy, love, and trust; towards the psychology of relationships between people. In Dostoevsky’s writing ethics and aesthetics are much more intertwined than in the works of any other author. The same interconnection is evident in the virtual and environmental designs and in the principles of the contemporary poster.

This is just one of the aspects of Dostoevsky’s creativity that relate him to the styles and visual languages of the modern poster. Another thing that links his writing with contemporary visual arts is the complexity and polyphony of Dostoevsky’s multi-layered narrative.

Today’s poster is moving away from its traditional concise imagery and mandatory clarity of message towards the fluid complexity, multidimensional compositions, and semantic ambiguity, all of which aligns the poster with ideas expressed by Dostoevsky.

As part of this call we have received nearly 1000 poster submissions by artists from around the globe. Admitted artworks can be found at the Facebook group “DOSTOEVSKY 200 / BEAUTY SAVES THE WORLD”.

A selection of 200 posters created by 178 designers from 36 countries became a virtual exhibit hosted by PosterTerritory platform. The countries represented in this exhibition are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Venezuela, Hungary, Hong Kong, Greece, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Spain, Italy, China, Kosovo, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, USA, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ecuador, Estonia, Japan. All 200 virtual exhibition participants will receive a certificate of participation. (List of participants can be found here).

Golden Bee’s celebration of Dostoevsky’s cultural impact will not end with just this event. The theme of Dostoevsky will also be included as one of the main nominations in the “Golden Bee 15”, which will be announced soon.
